It’s being rumoured that NVIDIA will be revealing DLSS 5 very soon, complete with the new Neural Rendering technology, given the leak of the alleged feature with NBA 2K27. Now, a modder who got their hands on the DLL file has unofficially applied it to another game.
The modder is part of the RenoDX modding community, who seems to have successfully applied the DLSS 5 upscaler to Control. As Videocardz puts it, the clearest demonstration of the Neural Rendering application is on Jesse’s character model. It adds more details – contours, wrinkles, indentations, any blemish that shows either with age or is genetically present – to Jesse’ face. The functions are customisable, with the strength of the Neural Rendering adjustable as well. All in all, the feature does really give the old game a fresh look, literally.

Now, it goes without saying that the mod the modder got is far from perfect and still something of a prototype. HDR still isn’t working properly, and one of the modders of the RenoDX group says that one pass of the feature through the pipeline runs late, causing the implementation to cause the game to run almost 50% slower than other run-throughs, in one test. And that, by the way, is with an RTX 5070 Ti running at 4K.
As a quick recap, NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 earlier this year at GTC 2026. The new upscaler will introduce the new Neural Rendering technology that infuses pixels with photorealistic lighting and material that will, and its CEO puts it, “bridge the divide between rendering and reality”.
It’s no secret that when NVIDIA showed off DLSS 5, the reception was mixed; initial applications of the technology weren’t as convincing as what the modder can show us now, to the point that reports, including this portal, simply viewed it as the GPU brand using some Generative AI tool.
To be clear, AI is definitely a key factor in its design, but it is clear that the development process of DLSS 5 has certainly come leaps and bounds.
