Just as it previously promised, Huawei has launched its latest tri-fold smartphone in China. Succeeding the original Mate XT, the Mate XT 2 comes with a completely redesigned folding mechanism and some notable upgrades. With the reworked hinge, the device folds inward in a wing-like shape, necessitating a separate outer display.
Speaking of which, the three-panel foldable smartphone sports a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED cover screen with a 2,442 x 1,140 pixel resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 6,500 nits of peak brightness. This screen incorporates basalt glass, which according to Huawei allows for better drop and scratch resistance. Meanwhile, the inner display uses a 10.2-inch 90Hz LTPO OLED panel with a 2,232 x 3,184 pixel resolution and a 12.8:9 aspect ratio. Furthermore, this screen boasts a built-in privacy feature, much like the one on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Like its precursor, the phone maintains a slim and light build. When unfolded, the device measures 3.5mm at its thinnest point. It also weighs around 299g, making it lighter than the competition. Furthermore, it comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, as well as touch-sensitive buttons on either side of the frame. Apparently, these can record the userβs ECG. The foldable also features IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance.
Under the hood, the phone packs the new Kirin 9050 Pro SoC. Whatβs notable about this chipset is the fact that it is the first mobile processor built using the brandβs LogicFolding architecture. The chip, which sports an upgraded NPU and GPU, is supposedly more than 42% faster than the one equipped on the Mate XTs. On the Mate XT 2, this processor gets paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage.
Keeping the lights on is a 5,600mAh battery with support for 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. On the software side, the phone runs on HarmonyOS 7. Connectivity features include 5G, dual 4G, WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, GPS, and NFC. Satellite communication is also on board.
As for imaging, the foldable sports a 50MP 1/1.28-inch RYYB LOFIC main shooter. This is accompanied by a 50MP RYYB periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom and a 40MP RYYB ultra-wide camera. A third gen Red Maple colour sensor is also included. These are all housed within an octagonal camera module situated on the middle panel. For selfies, both front cameras use an 8MP sensor.
In China, the Huawei Mate XT 2 comes in three colours: Black, Purple, and White. Pricing starts from CNY19,999 (~RM12,052) for the 16GB + 256GB configuration. For the time being, there is no word on global availability, let alone a local launch.
