
Back in June, AMD released Fidelity Super Resolution 4.1 (FSR 4.1) support for its older Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs, thus enticing Radeon GPU gamers with the promise of smoother performance. However, that may not necessarily be the case, based on the findings of German tech outlet ComputerBase.
ComputerBase tested FSR 4.1 with two GPUs: a Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7600. For a baseline, they also tested both GPUs with FSR 3.1, which itself was designed for RDNA3 GPUs. Additionally, the outlet tested the GPU at 2,560 x 1,440 and 3,440 x 1,440 resolutions, and through pure rasterisation (read: no ray tracing) for most of them.
ComputerBase tested the two cards over a laundry list of titles, taking the total average frames of all games and condensing them against other GPUs, which include a Radeon RX 9070, both standard and GRE, plus an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070, RTX 5060 Ti, and RTX 4060, and even Intel Arc Battlemage GPUs. That said, the site doesn’t quite make clear on what FSR 4.1 mode it is using
At 2,560 x 1,440, the 7800 XT reportedly sees its performance drop from an average of 70 fps on FSR 3.1 to 66.1 fps when running on FSR 4.1. By ComputerBase’s estimates, that is a 7% loss. With the first RX 7600, it went from 36.5 fps to 33.1 fps.
Bump the resolution up a notch to 3,440 x 1,440, and that gap actually grows for the 7800 XT. The German outlet records a drop from 59.4 fps to 54.8 fps, which is around 8%. Then, at 4K resolution, that average frame count drops from 43.4 fps to 39.2 fps. As a reminder, these differences are between FSR 3.1 and FSR 4.1.
A couple of things that ComputerBase notes is that the performance penalties differ from title to title. That hyperbole, by the way, ranges from 2% in some titles to 18% in titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Understandably, FSR 4.1 running in Performance mode reportedly produces cleaner textures and images, compared to when the 7800 XT is running on FSR 3.1 Quality Mode.
