Penang Development Corporation appoints consultant to revive Komtar

GEORGE TOWN, March 25 — Penang Development Corporation (PDC) has appointed a consultant to look into reviving Komtar, said its chief executive officer Datuk Aziz Bakar.

“We will continue our efforts to revitalise Komtar, maybe look into creating different zones,” Aziz said.

He said they will need consider the various activities that can be held in Komtar to make it a lively place again.

“We should be receiving a proposal from the consultant in three months’ time,” he said.

He said they will also hold engagement sessions with stakeholders as some of the retail spaces are privately owned.

“So, we need to discuss together with the stakeholders to see what kind of activities we can introduce in Komtar,” he said.

Komtar, an abbreviation of Kompleks Tunku Abdul Rahman, was completed in 1985 and is located in the city centre of George Town.

Today, the complex mainly houses the state government administrative centre and urban transformation centre (UTC) while its other components, mainly the retail space and mall, have deteriorated over the years.
