Smart Unveils #5 EHD PHEV Variant In China

The Smart #5, which debuted in Malaysia during the Malaysia Auto Show (MAS 2025), now has a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. It is known as the Smart #5 EHD (Electric Hybrid Drive). The unveling was also announced by the automaker on its Weibo page.

The official images of the hybrid were recently released by the automaker, and from the pictures, it seems like there is not much difference in terms of the design. The only differences that can be spotted are the roof LiDAR and a variation in the front and rear bumpers.

However, looking at the dimensions, the #5 EHD seems to be bigger than its twin. It measures 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,710 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. This could mean that the car might have a larger interior with more headroom and legroom.

This, however, cannot be confirmed at the moment as the company has yet to reveal the official images of the interior. Nevertheless, since the exterior does not show much difference, this writer thinks that it would be the same case for the interior.

If that is so, then we can expect the 13-inch dual display for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Also, we can expect the cockpit to feature the AMD V2000 chip, which powers the Smart OS.

Now coming to the powertrain, just like its twin, the Smart #5 EHD is offered in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The RWD features an electric motor with either 250 kW and 373 Nm of torque output or 267 kW / 373 Nm of output. The motor is powered by a 76 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery or a 100 kWh ternary lithium battery. It has a CLTC range of 570 km and 740 km, respectively.

The AWD version adds a 165 kW and 270 Nm front electric motor, working in tandem with the 100 kWh ternary lithium battery. This configuration offers a CLTC cruising range of up to 670 km or 580 km, depending on the specific setup. Additionally, for both trims, it features a 1.5T engine with an output of 120 kW.

The Smart #5 EHD was unveiled in China; however, there is no added information on the specifications of the car. Furthermore, it was not stated when it will be launched globally or whether it will make its way to Malaysia.
