After what has been a very long suspension (and numerous delays), the Aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is set to resume operations on 1 July 2025. Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed the announcement after inspecting the newly completed system, which is now undergoing final safety tests ahead of its relaunch.

Loke said the resumption comes after extensive trials, including a critical emergency response test, to ensure the highest safety standards are met. These tests are being conducted to confirm that the system is ready for full passenger use.

The aerotrain has served as KLIA’s internal rail system since the airport opened in 1998. It was suspended in March 2023 due to a breakdown that disrupted passenger movement between the airport’s main terminal and its satellite building.

According to Loke, the updated system consists of three train sets, each comprising three carriages and capable of transporting 270 passengers per trip. Two trains will be operational at any given time, while the third will remain on standby to ensure uninterrupted service.

During peak hours, both tracks will be in use to accommodate higher traffic volumes. Off-peak operations between midnight and 5am will be limited to a single track to facilitate scheduled maintenance.

While the aerotrain returns to service, the existing shuttle bus system will continue to operate as a complementary mode of transport. Loke emphasised that both services are needed to ensure smooth travel within KLIA and reduce congestion.

This dual-mode approach is part of broader efforts to enhance KLIA’s operational readiness. The minister noted that this is especially critical as Malaysia prepares to host major events under its ASEAN chairmanship and gears up for Visit Malaysia 2026.

Loke also stressed the importance of maintaining the aerotrain system moving forward. Oversight from the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) will continue as part of ongoing safety and performance checks.
