Honda Malaysia released a press statement today announcing a massive product recall involving 87,490 cars. The purpose of this recall is to replace the fuel pump of these models as a precautionary measure.

In the press release, the automaker has listed two components of the fuel pump that need to be replaced. The first is the fuel pump impeller, which,  according to the Honda, may swell after prolonged fuel immersion which can cause the vehicle to fail to start, or stall the engine while driving.

The models that are involved in this problem are Jazz, City, Civic, Accord, BR-V, HR-V, CR-V and Odyssey which accounts for a total of 84,073. All these models are from the year 2014 to 2020 as shown in the table below.

The other component that needs to be replaced is the high-pressure fuel pump in 3,417 units of the Civic and CR-V from the year 2023 and 2024. The reason being that the component has the chance of cracking due to prolonged use and excessive stress, potentially leading to a fuel leak or giving rise to fuel odour while driving or idling.

Honda Malaysia also stated that the affected customers will receive notification letters with the details of the product recall. Additionally, customers can also use the HondaTouch app to determine if their vehicle is affected by the recall. “Honda Malaysia urges all affected customers to contact any Honda authorised dealer to make an appointment upon receipt of the notification to replace the fuel pump, subject to parts availability,” the company added.

Furthermore, the replacement for the faulty components will be done free of charge and the costs related to the replacement, such as labour fees will be borne by Honda Malaysia. Fortunately, no incidents have been reported due to these faulty components.

“Honda Malaysia apologises for the inconvenience caused to the affected customers and reassures that all current production and selling models are not affected in this product recall,” it stated in the press release. “The Company believes this product recall is necessary as customer safety is Honda Malaysia’s top priority.”

This is the second time in this year that Honda models have been recalled. As we reported before, back in February Honda models were recalled by the road transport department (JPJ) due to numbering issues.
