Google Officially Launches Pixel Watch 5, Pixel Tag

With the Made by Google event now in full force, the internet search giant has unveiled its newest wave of devices. While the main attraction for the event is the newest range of smartphones, the company’s newest accessory lineup, which will be the subject of this article.

For your reference, we are talking about the Google Pixel Watch 5 and the Pixel Tag. Itโ€™s worth mentioning that the company also touched on Pixel Buds Pro 2, but it offers nothing incredibly new to the table save for a new olive colourway.

For starters, we have the Pixel Watch 5, which comes in two different sizes: a 41mm model and a 45mm variant. The display is a domed Actua 360 320 ppi AMOLED display that offers up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness and up to 60Hz refresh rate. The main unit is protected by a custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5; Google says that the wearable can survive up to 5 ATM of pressure and has an IP68 dust and water resistance.

Itโ€™s worth noting that the only other difference between the 41mm and 45mm models besides size is their batteries. According to Google, the former has a 332mAh battery, while the latter has a 465mAh cell. The company notes that they can last for up to 48 hours and 72 hours with Battery Saver on, respectively. Charging is relatively the same as last gen thanks to the Quick Charge Dock, which helps the watches from empty to half-full in about 15 minutes.

Other than that, the internals of the two watches are the same. Both come with a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated SoC and Cortex-M55 co-processor and 64GB of eMMC flash storage.

In terms of OS, it runs Wear OS 7.0. Connectivity-wise it has 4G LTE and UMTS, Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax 2.4GHz, 5GHz, NFC, Ultra-Wideband, and Satellite SOS communication.

Like most smartwatches these days, the Pixel Watch 5 comes with an array of health monitoring and tracking systems. The most notable of the health features are the Insulin Resistance Trend and Blood Pressure Trend features. There is also the Health Guardian for passive monitoring, Breathing Emergency Detection, irregular rhythm notification + AFib, loss of pulse alerts, among other things.

On the other side of that coin, Google says that the Pixel Watch 5 has an upgraded fitness system, with support for more than 50 exercises. It also has tailored workouts and โ€œimproved tools that can help users better understand their performance, sleep and recovery.

There are also the new Gemini Intelligence features that supposedly proactively surface useful information such as flight updates and ETAs. All users have to do is raise their wrist and ask the AI their questions.

Last are the colour combos. For the 45mm model it is available in a Matte Black aluminium case + Obsidian Active Band, a Polished Silver aluminium case + Fog Active Band, and a Satin Pyrite aluminium case + Olive Active Band. Meanwhile, the 41mm unit gets all the aforementioned colours with an additional Champagne Gold aluminium case + Canyon Active Band.

Next is the Pixel Tag. If youโ€™ve read our previous coverage, then you know that this last-minute addition to the family is Googleโ€™s first finder tag. The device utilises an accelerometer as its main sensor. Just below the logo, you can spot the speaker grilles for the built-in speaker.

Design-wise, the device is an oblong-shaped device that is largely made with metal and plastic. The Pixel Tag only comes in one colour: Fog, which is just white. Moving on, the tracker has a water- and dust resistance rating of IP67, which can reportedly survive a depth of one metre for 30 minutes.

For connectivity, it features advanced tracking like Ultra Wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth Channel Sounding. Keeping the device alive is a replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery, which Google claims can last for a year.

Pricing And Availability

The Pixel Watch 5 has a starting price of RM1,799 for the 41mm model, while its 45mm sibling will retail for RM1,999. Both variants are available for pre-order now, with wider availability starting on 20 August. Those interested can get the wearable via CelcomDigi, Maxis, Urban Republic, Senheng, Shopee, U Mobile, and Thundermatch.

Unfortunately, we do not know how much the Pixel Tag will retail for in Malaysia. Foreign online sources say a unit costs US$29 (~Rm118). As for availability, Google only mentioned that it will be coming soon in November.
