Xiaomi 15T Pro Hands On: Familiar On The Outside, Flashy On The Inside

Xiaomi had recently unveiled the Xiaomi 15T series locally yesterday alongside a series of accessories and tablets. I wanted to play around with what both of these devices had to offer, but unfortunately I did not have the time. Luckily, the company did provide me with the Pro model ahead of time to test, hence is the subject of this article.

Right out of the box, the first thing I noticed about the Xiaomi 15T Pro was its weight and that it had quite some heft to it. Its curved corners and flat surrounding frame make it comfortable to hold even though it weighs a little more than other phones on the market. It also gives it a sturdy feel, though I am not willing to test its durability.

The next thing that piqued my interest was its design or lack thereof. The device’s front and back felt fairly simple, almost minimalistic, with only the camera module vying for your attention. In a way, the device is quite ordinary but it does make sense, as Xiaomi is ultimately advertising what’s inside the device.

Now that I have mentioned it, one of the key selling features of this phone is the new camera array that was made in collaboration with Leica. The company boasts that the phone is capable of 5x telephoto shots without the aid of AI, which I genuinely had fun with. Considering the amount of detail the camera can capture at 100x zoom, I can honestly say that I am impressed, especially considering how much the device retails for.

Unfortunately, I was less impressed with its night photography, as it feels like it was doing one of two extremes. It’s either adding too much light that the image looks bleached (for lack of a better term) or too dark that the image is a tad grainy. In short, it feels like it is overcompensating.

Gaming and streaming with the device also felt nice thanks to its Dimensity 9400+ chipset and its substantial 5,500mAh battery. Navigating its OS also felt smooth and responsive, which was nice when I needed to quickly whip out the device to capture a scurrying cat.

Circling back to the battery, I was equally impressed and worried with its 90W Hypercharge. A 30-minute charge, impressively enabled up to 80% from zero, but the phone did get considerably warm. While it won’t reach alarming levels, this is something potential buyers should take note of.

Overall, the Xiaomi 15T Pro is an impressive device that can go toe-to-toe with some other brands. To recap, the 5x telephoto lives up to the hype but its night mode fell flat. Whether it can live up to its self-proclaimed label of “flagship killer” remains to be seen.
